i want to tell you a story

jamesandrew:

about a very peculiar tree. this tree, in its youth, stood the tallest of all the other trees in its forest, had the thickest bark, and the greenest leaves. it was a sight to behold. unfortunately, over the years, the weather grew worse and worse, hammering the forest with storm after storm. battered and worn, the forest began to wither. the tree was not immune to this hardship, and too became frail and weak. its bark was all but chipped off, leaves ripped to shreds. still though, the tree stood tall and firm. the constant winds forced the tree to grow it’s roots deep and thick. no force on earth could move this tree, could break its hold.

eventually, the harsh weathers subsided and the forest began to regrow to its former glory. everything was again green and growing. except, the tallest of the trees remained barren and white. no bark would regrow to protect the tree. no leaves would sprout. the tree stood tall and still. nothing could move it.

until, a tall, awkward, skinny little girl happened to wonder into the forest, and immediately was drawn to the strange tree. she was confused as to how the tree could still stand when it was clearly so weak. she felt that if she simply gave the tree a good shove it would surely fall. instead of push it down, she decided that she would help this tree. she came back nearly every single day, and tried to think of what she could do to help the tree regrow.

suddenly, the girl had an idea. she quickly ran back home and returned with a shovel and began to dig. soon the girl realized that she was about to embark on no simple task. she dug for days on end, trying to unearth every single root. months and months went by, and eventually the girl began to feel that the roots would never end. she could never simply dig the tree out. another idea crept into her head, and after much thought and deliberation, she decided that there was no other way. she returned home, and this time brought back an axe. without hesitation she began to hack away at the exposed roots. they were so thick it took her almost all day to cut through one. weeks passed and soon she was almost done.

when she laid her last blow, the tree slowly began to rise. up into the sky the tree floated, into the clouds. like magic, new, green leaves sprouted from the tips of its branches. thick brown bark stretched across every inch of the tree. without any roots to hold it in place, the tree soared across the sky, so high that nothing could touch it. nothing could hurt it again. so high that no roots could ever hope to hold it down.

back in the forest, the girl wiped away her tears, for she had grown to love the tree and while she was happy to see it beautiful and strong once again, she was sorry that tree had gone. she looked up after the tree, although now it was too small for her to see, and smiled a sad smile.  she had fixed the tree, and took comfort in the fact that she knew nothing could ever harm it again.
