I disagree with this. Yes, it is incredibly true that our armed forces have always and will always be our nations first and most important heroes.
However, in comparison to past years, this past year has hardly had the situation which would support this notion. If Time were to do this, now is not the time- it would undermine the significance of our past armed forces in more dire situations of war, and it would also undermine the future situations we can easily fall into.
The person of the year award has always been given to someone who makes a difference and impacts the
nationworld in an irreversible way. Times point, which was very true (after reading the entire issue) is that the people who protested around the world (note, not just Occupy) made a point which set the tone of the world for 2011. It effected politics, media, entertainment, social media, the way we all interact. The fact that someone would suggest that the Protester is an “idiot” (within the parameters of this being every protest from 2011) is rude and wrong. Men and women, especially in Egypt, Libyan, etc were killed for standing up for their rights. It was these movements that inspired a change and a drastic upheaval of the status quo in many nations across the world. The social justice alone that has spawned from these incidents is extremely important to recognize.
“The Protester” could easily become the single most important “person” (as categorized by the role they played within the world) not just within this past year, but into the next decade. What took place because of the protests models many of the past protest enabled historical events from the past, and historians will have endless amounts to say about these interactions. It will, without doubt, be something in our children’s history books.
However, there was not anything nearly significant which happened to our armed forces this past year. For Time to have named the “Protector” the person of the year in say, 2001- that would have been one thing. Or during the peak of the Cold War. Or during the peak of World War II. Those would make sense. There would be names and events to tie to it. But this past year was hardly the same situation.
