When the doctor has wrapped you up and placed you in my arms, I will lift you high above my head and present you to the world Lion King-style. I will give you a name that teachers pronounce correctly during roll call. When you cry in the middle of the night, I will sing to you. I will play outdoors with you. When you are hurt, I will supply Band-Aids and kisses. I will show you the magic found in books. We will build forts. We will take naps inside our forts. We will have lightsaber duels, and I will let you win. We will play chess, but I will not let you win because you must learn how to think. I will enroll you in ninja school. We will watch musicals. We will play video games. I will spray you with SPF 50 when we go to the beach. I will encourage you to take piano/vocal/guitar lessons. I will dress you in clothes from H&M. I will discipline you when you misbehave. I will love you when I discipline you. Your mother will teach you math, and I will teach you grammar. We will write letters and poetry. We will sing. We will dance. We will play musical instruments. We will have inside jokes and laugh until our cheeks hurt. I will take you to Disneyland. I will read you bedtime stories — true stories about a Garden, about a flood and an ark, about a burning bush, about a young shepherd who slayed a giant, about a Man and His cross. We will pray before meals, we will pray before bed, and I will pray for you while you sleep. One day, you will fly. Stick with me, kids, and I will give you wings.

I couldn’t help but wonder: What if mom’s bad at math too? Ha ha… lovely though.
