Loving someone does not mean I know who they are; it means I have some understanding of who I am. If I am not loving someone, it is not because they are unlovable, but because I am not asking Jesus to show me who He is when I look at them.
Of course, it’s “easier” to love someone when you don’t know who they are if you think that loving a person is about finding out more about them, instead of finding out more about the person of Christ. Love always points to Jesus. Guard your heart by giving it all to God; then and only then will you be able to love your neighbor as yourself, because it is then that you will understand how God has loved you: not because you are worthy, but because He Himself is love. You do not love someone because they are an agreeable person or exceeding in virtue, but because God has loved you.
